Challenge Accepted

I’m sure by now you’ve heard all about the latest internet sensation…the Mannequin Challenge. While prepping for Flower School last week, Team Fleuriste had some fun and got in on the mannequin action! { I have a feeling the whole world will participate in this challenge when everyone is sitting in a turkey coma on Thanksgiving day }

{ Field Trip Friday } Amy Cakes

Today’s Field Trip Friday could be my favorite so far because hello, cake samples! The team from Amy Cakes and the team from The Fleuriste have worked together on some pretty incredible weddings so I had to check them out, outside of event day, and get a behind-the-scenes look at their operation!
{ Field Trip Friday } Amy Cakes   { Field Trip Friday } Amy Cakes   { Field Trip Friday } Amy Cakes
Amy, also known as “Cake Mom” of Amy Cakes, has been in business since 2004. Her passion for sweets started in the bakery section of Albertson’s when she was 19. {But even before that? She worked with flowers for four years! No wonder our businesses get along so well.} As the business has grown, so have the cakes. I’ll never forget the six foot cake at the #LeaveItToBeavers wedding this summer! The base was 30” wide and fed 500 people! It was a total showstopper.

{ Field Trip Friday } Amy CakesI had to ask my favorite #FieldTripFriday question: “What is the biggest diva moment you’ve had with a bride?” Amy’s take is…brides are delightful but the mother of the bride can be a different story. After all, moms envision a daughter’s wedding as soon as she is  born, so passion can get the best of them! {I just had a daughter and can totally attest to the accuracy of this statement…sorry future wedding vendors…}

{ Field Trip Friday } Amy CakesI giggled at the notion of Amy Cakes‘ team not having a favorite flavor. Undeniably, they agree their cake is best; but apparently, you really can have too much of a good thing. {all sweets addicts are recoiling in horror right now} Creating 70 wedding cakes in May and June alone might make me feel the same way! Just kidding…I would totally love every sugary bite.

Cue the Confetti

Today’s bride is a girl after my own heart. With a passion for Kate Spade and all things chic, Taylor was a match made for me! { and lets be honest, she was a match made for Team Fleuriste since Kate Spade is one of our favorite design divas } Black and white stripes never go out of style and when you mix that with gold confetti? Hello, soulmate!

Our uber-creative design team came up with not only one, but two fabulous alternatives for the ring bearer and flower girl.  Blossom bag in tote, the on-trend flower girl was paired perfectly down the aisle with the dapper ring bearer.

{ Field Trip Friday } Ace Cuervo Photography

#FieldTripFriday is back y’all and today I’m talking to Ace Cuervo, wedding photographer extraordinaire. Since I’m still newish to Team Fleuriste, this series has been the perfect way of meeting other vendors in the event business. With Ace, he and I have met several times but haven’t had the chance to talk at length. { he’s usually shooting the bridal party while Team Fleuriste is setting up for the wedding } After today, I can totally see why brides feel so comfortable trusting their memories to Ace…we talked for almost 45 minutes and now I’m pretty sure we’re BFF!

Ace Cuervo | The FleuristeAce Cuervo | The FleuristeAce Cuervo | The Fleuriste

Luckily for all future brides, Ace may be based in Tulsa but travels anywhere he can for a wedding. I imagine he has shot in some grand locations but as he says, he likes to “bloom where you’re planted” so regardless of location, his goal is to find the beauty where he is. I’m sure its easy to fall into a repetitive trend, taking the same photos over and over but luckily Ace focuses on making sure each wedding is unique to the couple and never replicates the same images.

Ace Cuervo | The Fleuriste

As a first-generation immigrant, photography wasn’t a dream Ace had as a child but it quickly became a passion later in life. He received his business degree but decided pursing an MBA wasn’t in the cards. For years he worked at the Tulsa World as a photojournalist and gradually started shooting weddings on the side. { In fact, his first bride had to persuade him to take her pictures…she deserves a prize for getting him started in the business! } Eventually weddings called to him more than newspapers so nine years ago, Ace Cuervo Photography officially launched and he started the journey in self-employment!

Ace Cuervo | The Fleuriste

Speaking of self-employment, Ace is loving life as his own boss and setting his own hours. His favorite thing to do when he isn’t working is to relax with his family. { his wife of 12 years and two kids, 5 & 7 } Talented in not only photography, Ace also loves to work with metal and tinker around the house. When I started to hear about his love of vacations and his favorite island off of Cancun, I had to shut the conversation down. { I mean, if you aren’t going to take me there, why talk about it? AmIRight? }

Ace Cuervo | The Fleuriste

My favorite question to ask in this series? “Is there a drama or diva moment that you can share?” Once again, I was totally let down and not given the inside scoop { I suppose this helps get repeat business… } but Ace did share that when weather doesn’t cooperate, potential melt-downs could ensue so he’s become a pro at shooting around the crazy Oklahoma weather. As he says, “we can’t always have the beautiful sunsets so lets use what we have around us.” A break in the rain can turn into a mantel-worthy portrait or lightening and drama in the sky can create the perfect backdrop for a bride and groom!

Thanks to my new BFF…I mean Ace…for taking us behind-the-scenes of Ace Cuervo Photography! Have a great weekend!

Once Upon A Time…

…there was a teenage girl who dreamed about her wedding. Today’s bride, Nishay, planned her ‘Happily Ever After’ when she was only 15 years old and brought the proof { what we’ll now refer to as THE binder } to our first consultation. This fairytale wedding included not only one modern princess and her prince charming, but also our favorites: lush flowers and dreamy details.

Nishay & Anthony | The Fleuriste

Nishay’s passion for posh blooms was evident by the large section of THE binder devoted just to flowers. All of spring’s best were needed to create this storybook wedding. { peonies, sweat pea, hydrangea, garden roses and ranunculus…just to name a few } Based on Nishay’s reaction upon entering the ballroom, #TeamFleuriste nailed it!

Nishay & Anthony | The FleuristeNishay & Anthony | The Fleuriste -2Nishay & Anthony | The Fleuriste -8

Romantic floral designs spilling from silver vessels in shades of blush, ivory and champagne accented the room. Cascading flowers topped the delicious five-tiered ivory cake while the sweetest floral crown topped the head of one very special flower girl! { Perhaps Nishay will pass on her love of weddings and we’ll see her flower girl toting her own wedding binder one day? }

Happily Ever After has never looked so happy. Congratulations Nishay & Anthony! To see more of their dream wedding, view the full gallery on our website.

{ Feature Friday } Sal!

Today’s feature is The Man.The Myth.The Legend…Sal! There is no better time to start writing from my point of view than the present { Hi, my name is Laura and I write these blogs } and I can’t wait for you to meet my Sal Pal. Back in October when I started working with the team, I quickly dubbed Mr. Salvatore Bovino “Sal Pal” because one, I love a cheesy rhyme and two, it is so true. Once you meet Sal, you get a Pal for life! { But seriously, meet him once and he’ll remember you forever }

A notorious joke teller, this cheerful man is behind the wheel for The Fleuriste driving our van and helping us with any number of odd jobs around the store. He knows every back road in town, the dirt on every family you’ve ever heard of, still uses a flip phone and has a heart of gold! If you really want to get to know Sal, you’ll have to catch him at happy hour. { he prefers Skyy } Otherwise, for the immediate inquiring minds, I’ve asked all of the hard questions below.

Sal | The Fleuriste

How long have you been at The Fleuriste? Just a little over five years

What is your favorite part of your job? I love working with the other members of the team. I also love to deliver flowers to the ladies who are home and see their smiling faces!

What does a typical work day look like? When I first get to work, I’ll see what we have on the calendar for the day and get my instructions. Each day is different, which keeps it interesting for me. { Side note: I love sending Sal on errands for us. He is Team Fleuriste’s best PR because he knows everyone in town! }

What’s your favorite flower? Godetia

What’s your favorite thing to do when you aren’t working? I like to mingle! { Side note: This was seriously his answer and all I got out of him! }

Where did you work before The Fleuriste? Right before coming to The Fleuriste, I worked at Michael’s Florist for eight years to the day. Before that, I was retired but before that, I was in the restaurant business. My late wife and I owned Sissy’s Tea and Luncheon Room in the First National Center. She wouldn’t let me in the kitchen so I worked the front of the restaurant while she was in the back!

Do you have a { clean and short } joke you can share with us? That’s too hard. I don’t have many of those and can’t remember any right now. { Side note: this is the honest truth. Sal’s jokes need adult supervision }

{ Field Trip Friday } OKC Golf & Country Club

Fridays are for fun and what’s a part of Team Fleuriste’s fun? Field Trips! We love an excuse to get away from our desks { especially before a long weekend! } so today we’re getting out of the office and talking to Tracy Johnson, Event Director, at the Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club.

Callie & Matthew tracy.johnson014 Callie & Matthew

For the past three years, Tracy has been responsible for overseeing all events at the club including everything from the annual member Christmas party to managing outside vendors during weddings. We can certainly say from experience, Tracy and her team make sure each event is executed perfectly!

Speaking of managing vendors, Team Fleuriste knows that we are Tracy’s favorite { obviously… } but when asked if she could agree with that statement, she diplomatically responded that her motto is “we are all a team so each vendor that comes in is treated like a part of the OKCGCC team to create the perfect event. I am truly enjoying developing friendships with the vendors here in OKC.” We suppose this response makes her job easier when she works with other vendors but we’ll always know the truth!

It goes without saying that planning events is a busy and stressful job. If you’ve ever planned a meeting or a party { or even just tried to get your friends to agree on a date for a lunch }, you know how crazy it can get so we had to know how Tracy does it every day. Her response? “I tell anyone thinking about event planning that you will either love it or hate it, there is no in-between.  If you love it you are crazy (and I love it so I am crazy) but it’s very rewarding.  No matter the event, and we do everything from business meetings to weddings, I want every detail to be perfect and each member and guest to have a great time.  I am so blessed to have an amazing staff here at the club that understands our vision and works to produce it every day.” Well…we love the floral event business so maybe we’re crazy too? No comment.

OKC Golf and Country Club

All of the events hosted at the club are great but one of our favorite times to be there? Christmas! Have you ever seen their 30 foot tree? It is spectacular! Team Fleuriste found out that OKCGCC has a farmer in Colorado who they use specifically for their Christmas trees. The pre-selected tree arrives at 6:30 a.m., the Sunday after the Beaux Arts Ball, and the next two days are spent decorating it. If you haven’t seen this gorgeous sight for yourself, make it a priority this December!

Thank you Tracy and the Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club for letting Team Fleuriste show you off today. We’re eagerly awaiting the end of the day so we can finish the week like Tracy does…by kicking off the heels and having a glass of wine. Cheers!

Gold and navy are always a classic combo as seen at table number five. Table number eight shows that organic is great { we love a cheesy rhyme } and how pretty is the watercolor calligraphy at table number one? Thanks to Pinterest, the ideas are endless!

{ Feature Friday } Kiley!

Have you been to a session of Flower School? If so, you are very familiar with today’s featured member of Team Fleuriste! Kiley is one of our floral designers and is the one always giving the best advice and tips during our floral classes. { The wine fairies are great too, but you know…having an actual floral designer help you during class is usually a plus! } Kiley recently celebrated her two year anniversary with the team and can be seen working side-by-side with George and the rest of the floral crew on our incredible designs. In her spare time, she can be found with an adult coloring book, a mimosa and the nicest coloring pencils on the market! Here, in her own words, is a little more about Kiley Ann…

Kiley | The Fleuriste

What would be in your last meal (you only get three items)? Oranges, champagne and kettle cooked jalapeño chips { Team Fleuriste side note: Kiley is a mimosa-aficionado so it is no surprise to us that oranges and champagne made her last meal! }

Do you have any pets? If so, what are their names? I have a handsome dog named Charlie Tyler Patterson Woodard

What is your favorite weekend activity? Brunch & Netflix

What is your favorite part of your job? Helping out with the floral classes and teaching people design { Team Fleuriste side note: we knew she loved this part! Kiley is awesome at helping everyone in Flower School }

If you could time travel to any era, which one would you visit? Whatever era it is when I’m retiring, that’s where I want to be.

What is your favorite movie? Hocus Pocus

What is your favorite flower? Dahlias { Team Fleuriste side note: we love this high petal count flower, too! Here is more about how to grow and maintain this beauty }

On Wednesdays, We Wear Pink!

Its #WeddingWednesday! Today’s wedding is brought to you by the color pink. Just when you think you’ve added enough pink…inevitably you add more! Remember in “Steel Magnolias” when Julia Roberts said, “Pink is my signature color,” well today’s bride, Evan, channeled her inner-Shelby and dazzled her groom, Drew, in a glamorous pink gown.

Evan & Drew | The FleuristeEvan & Drew | The FleuristeEvan & Drew | The Fleuriste

Cherry blossom trees highlighting the head table created a spectacular focal point in the ballroom. Other fabulous details from the night included pink flowers and crystals floating off of the chandeliers, brilliant blooms { in the signature colors of blush and bashful, of course } adorning the yummy cake and gold pom-poms { a nod to Evan’s cheerleading days } to celebrate the couple’s departure. This wedding wasn’t lacking in glam and girly details!

Evan and Drew | The Fleuriste

And we wouldn’t dare forget about the groom – custom suits were made for the groomsmen and a whiskey bar with vintage Georgetown memorabilia was set up next to the ballroom. To keep the college spirit alive, Evan and Drew were escorted to their getaway car while the band played the OU Fight Song! We’re toasting the happy couple with a glass of Rosé and drooling over more of their wedding photos found in our gallery online.
